For the past couple of months the Power Mac 7300/200 (OS 9.1) in my office
has been giving me bomb messages on a cold start. Start up begins
normally, but after all the icons have appeared at the bottom of the
screen, a bomb window appears. Usually it says "segment loader error".
When I click on the Restart button, I often get another bomb window before
it actually restarts; it says "unimplemented trap". Clicking on its
Restart button, I may get either a restart, or yet another bomb window
saying "illegal instruction", followed by a blank window and a freeze.

The first (or even the second restart) may repeat these messages, but
sometimes I'm lucky and get a normal start up. A restart from the Mac OS
CD, or from the internal HD with extensions off, usually works. Disk First
Aid finds nothing to complain of in the internal hard drive. After the
machine has been running for 5 minutes, a restart from the internal HD
almost always goes smoothly and the rest of the day no further problems
occur. It appears that a 5-minute warmup is all the machine wants. Any
ideas of how to deal with this?

The machine long ago had extra RAM installed, but I haven't yet tried
removing it to see if it has developed a temperature-sensitive flaw. Is
there a program for checking RAM?
