temperature sensitive ram should fail when it's hot, not when it's cold.  failing when
it's cold would be due to a connection problem.  i'd suggest pulling all of the ram and
polishing the contact fingers with a clean pencil eraser (pen erasers are too 
aggressive).
 you can clean the pencil eraser on clean paper as needed.  this would be consistent 
with
a ram problem since more extensions means more ram in use and a greater chance of
accessing some not making a good connection (though unlikely, a cracked solder joint 
would
do the same thing).  you might also try reinstalling the os in case it's been mildly
corrupted, but even though it's more work i'd try cleaning the ram first.
