By my experiences with different kinds of computers, these system errors can be due to a bad RAM, processor or motherboard (most times it's the RAM). I'd try to replace *all* memory modules with known-good ones, and see if that helps.
Other thing to watch for is the tensions power supply is providing - which, at least in the older compact Macs, can sometimes cause system errors. I can't tell you how to measure it because I don't know the 5200, but you should make sure that the three main supplies (+12 V., +5 V. and +3.3 V) are within 5% of their stated value (for example, from +11.5 to +12.5 V. for the +12 V. line). If they aren't, you should adjust the 5200's power supply. Btw: maybe the System 9 CD boots without problem because it uses a minimum install of System 9 to boot from, or even a modified System 8.x copy. If it's the memory thing (which I think is the most probable option), it would explain easily why it crashes sometimes and doesn't in ither conditions: loading an OS setup with an smaller footprint would use less memory and reduce the chances of hitting a corrupted memory address.
