I've never used one of those port splitters, but they are probably not hard to get off swaplist. Assuming the problem resolves by using one of them, that seems like one reasonable solution. For what its worth, I'd be inclined to get a new machine before bothering to fix one that old. A beige G3 only costed me less than $50 a few months ago. Seems almost a sin to throw away a good machine that simply has a messed up port but a port splitter is going to take some bit of $ & of messinnng anyway and there is some mathematical chance that perhaps whatever blew.... blew past the point where the modem and printer ports electronicly connect inside the machine... thus potentially rendering your repair useless. (If a printer is still working that would obviously not be a question.) Assuming you tried the printer temporarily in the modem port, that allows you another bit of info to know what's going on. Going to a new mobo of course means getting hands dirty. Even if you're not that much into do it yourself, most mobo replaces are less than 2 hours with most of that time plodding along doing easy stuff very slowly and carefully. Port splitters obviously mean you don't have to be a surgeon, but I still probably wouldn't bother with them unless I could pick one up REALLY cheap and felt like seeing how they worked / satisfying my curiosity factor. Considering how low the cost is of various fixes...and the trouble level of them if they don't work, I'd probably go this route in this order: 1: New machine (probably a substantial upgrade since they're so cheap) 2: New MOBO (if I were particularly attatched to this machine) 3: Port Splitter HTH Don -- 1st-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
