remind me which machine you have and i'll look. if they are replaceable, it's either a receiver chip and a driver chip, or a combined reciever/driver chip. they are readily available, unless apple integrated those functions into a custom chip but they probably didn't due to the current and voltage that those have to handle. i've replaced them on an lc475 and it wasn't too hard, actually easier than through hole which are always tricky on multilayer boards (i.e., it's easy to pull a via out if you aren't careful, and if that via connects to a buried trace it's very hard to figure out where it went to repair it). i think you had said it was an x100 mac? i have a 6100,7100, and 8100 on hand to check for you, if it's doable i can give you the chip numbers and the identifier on the board (i.e. "Ux" where x is a number).
