Referring to the below messages, the machine is a 7100/66, and the port has
been blown for about 3 months now with no other noticeable effects. It was
blown thru the modem by a lightning strike related power surge on the phone line.
Yes, if you can easily get the chip numbers and location on the board, that
would be very helpful.

Do I understand correctly that these receiver/driver chips can probably be
ordered from computer parts warehouses and the like?

Also, I've yet to completely remove the board from this computer, and just
wondering, any tricks to getting it all the way out? All I've really done to it
so far is replaced memory, which required swiveling the drive cases up to
access the memory slots beneath.

Thanks again, Guy

<< remind me which machine you have and i'll look. if they are replaceable,
it's either a
receiver chip and a driver chip, or a combined reciever/driver chip. they
are readily
available, unless apple integrated those functions into a custom chip but
they probably
didn't due to the current and voltage that those have to handle. i've
replaced them on an
lc475 and it wasn't too hard, actually easier than through hole which are
always tricky on
multilayer boards (i.e., it's easy to pull a via out if you aren't careful,
and if that
via connects to a buried trace it's very hard to figure out where it went to
repair it).
i think you had said it was an x100 mac? i have a 6100,7100, and 8100 on
hand to check
for you, if it's doable i can give you the chip numbers and the identifier on
the board
(i.e. "Ux" where x is a number).
