Are you sure the CD has a bootable copy of 8.1 and NOT 8.0?
Just because it is an install CD I'm not sure that necessarily means it boots into 8.1.
I remember some of my 7.6 install CDs booted into 7.5.5.
Try booting off a 8.6 or 9.1 install CD.
