nope, apple doesn't let techs solder!  they are only allowed to replace whole
modules/boards etc.  but unless they pushed it into a custom chip, they are
 very standard parts.


I looked up the driver chip on an x500 series machine once. It was a standard National Semiconductor DS8925M, "LocalTalk Dual Driver, Triple Receiver". I would be surprised if the x100 doesn't use the same thing. After all, the serial ports are handled by the CURIO chip (AM79C950) and the CURIO chip was carried on from the x100 through to the x500 series. So I would expect the parts downstream (the driver chips) of the CURIO to stay the same as well.


That also probably expands the places from which you could salvage the needed parts. I suspect that the sources start at the Q840AV and Q660AV and run through the x600 series, including the 7200. But best to wait from Philip's specific information before jumping in any directions.
