I just finished setting the processor where it boots, loads and accesses programs at it's fastest rate. (By perceptive and mechanical [stopwatch] means) My CPU/system is optimized at 240mhz. with a 40mhz. bus speed. This means that with the XLR8 G3z CPU's DIP switches set to function at those speeds, this Mac, running OS 9.1 is quite quick. It's a subjective measure. A thorough benchmark would more likely reveal the true story. But this experiment of mine shows that CPU settings make a faster Mac IF you don't exceed the machine's speed-to-bus ratio balance. I may have been able to go faster if I had the memory matched. I also may get to go faster if I use an Ultra ATA 66 hard disk. How far can I go? Those who have done it will tell. Now, I will do the same tweak with the stock 9500 and it's XLR8 G3z. That'll give me a pair of fast-old Macs that are more than adequate for the rural 28.8 dial-up situation I'm in. And they'll probably fly nicely tied to a DSL connection when that occurs. Macs really rock!! Jeff G -- 1st-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
