The first thing I would try is replacing the battery. My computer is a 7100, and I seem to recall it doing similar unexplainable things which were fixed by putting a new battery in.

I think 9.0 because it would not take the 9.1 updater, but thats another story. I use the external as the startup drive and I use this computer maybe once a month. Last time I tried to start it up it would not start, I disconnected the external drive and it started up from the internal, twice now it won't start up at all not even from a cd. It lights up and chimes but the monitor lite stays yellow if I shut off the computer it turns green I tried another monitor but it made no difference. anyone have an idea?
