the early roms in the 6100, 7100, and 8100 were not compatible with 8.6 (or 8.5) and cause random crashes (sometimes rapidly, sometimes it works for some time, it's very random). i've had a 7100 with this problem and one that didn't have this problem (and i checked the rom simm version numbers to verify they were different). i do have a stack of rom simms but i haven't sorted them yet. if you are interested in swapping your rom simm i'll sort them this weekend, it would be cheap. otherwise just use os 9+ and os 8.1.
