Hey there. I am new to this group, so first off, I'd like to just say hello. Hello!
I recently got a lot of older macs, many of which were Power Mac 7100/66s. Upon testing them out, they all had a barebones installation of Mac OS 7.6 for the ones lacking CD ROM drives, and 8 for those with CD ROM drives. Seeing as there was no extra software and I was not the one who installed the OS, I proceeded to do a default install of 9.1. I experienced no problems booting off CD or installing anything for that matter. However, when I reboot, I get an unexplainable problem. 9 goes through the starting up phase where all of the extensions list down the bottom of the screen. The screen dissappears like it does normally when it is about to go into desktop mode, then the screen goes blank. The hard drive is still clicking, the fans are still running, everything seems fine. I check the video connection, no problems seem to be there. I do the three key restart and the screen is STILL black even when the hard drive begins to click and load up OS 9 (I'm assuming). I then unplug the cord, plug it back in, turn it on, and I can go through the entire process I listed off in this paragraph again. However, when I boot up with extensions disabled, I run into none of these problems. I am able to completely load 9 without a hitch (but of course without extensions) and it makes it way to the desktop with the icons and everything. I tried loading the Mac OS 9 Base extensions and rebooting but I still run into the same problems I listed in the previous paragraph. I have tried this in two 7100/66s with identical set up except for one card has no vram on the video card and the other does. However, both still come to the same problem. I've searched Google for answers, and come up with nothing (except your spiffy newsgroup in which I am thankful for). My system specs are as follows: Power Mac 7100/66 32 MB of RAM spread across 4 sticks Video card in brown slot on motherboard, not using on board DVI due to no connector adapter 700 MB Hard Drive 15" Compaq Monitor via Mac VGA to PC VGA connector 6x (I think) CD ROM drive. Mac OS 9.1 Trying to set this up to experiment with a small cluster. I will then probably end up getting rid of the cluster and donating each individual machine to people who really need them that have no computers at all. Thanks for reading all of this!
