I'll first try replacing the battery and see if it helps.

Do you have access to another machine in which you can test the SIMM which isn't showing up? Perhaps you have a bad chip.
Another possibility is that your motherboard battery is beginning to go. Memory problems are a common symptom. Fortunately it's a cheap replacement if this is the problem.
