I have had a similar problem with two Canon BC-21 cartridges. One never worked at all, while the other worked for a year or more before it developed the problem; nothing I did in the way of installing brand-new ink tanks or cleaning the cartridges with alcohol or warm water had any effect. I believe that the circuitry in these cartridges has failed and that is why the printer does not recognize their presence. As far as I know, there is no remedy except to discard the bad cartridge.
