so it is, in my experience no unit that is not labeled "apple" is bootable on these machines, though it works perfectly as a scsi unit...
then, again, i managed to boot off one, but it then only "seems" my drive if I boot the computer with the system CD in it... posted this once on the list, weird stuff :)

I have a 6100/60 with a non-functioning AppleCD 300Plus .
Hoping that someone on the list can advise whether this can be replaced
with a Sony CD-R/RW unit (M# CRX17OE)that was OE in my G4 before I
installed DVD-R/RW in same.
Any help would be appreciated-I just do not want to mess around blindly.

Thanks.

Is the Sony CD-R/RW unit (M# CRX17OE) a SCSI unit?

If so, it should work fine.

On second thought, it is likely that that drive, while it MAY work,
may not be "bootable."
