Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) does not support AFP/AT - Apple Filing Protocol (file sharing) over AppleTalk. It only supports AFP/IP (file sharing over IP).

Mac OS 8.1 only supports AFP/AT. It does not support AFP/IP.

The computers "see" each other because Tiger still supports the other AppleTalk services (printer, etc). But they cannot open an AFP connection because of the above.

The updated network browser on the older Mac supports AFP/IP, so it should let you connect TO the iBook.

Thanks Dan for the help. I also looked at the apple knowledge base and found something similar:

"As a solution, enable the TCP/IP protocol on the AFP server if it offers this option. If no TCP/IP option is available, connect to the Tiger computer from the computer that is the AppleTalk-only AFP server (instead of trying to connect from the Tiger computer to connect to the older computer). This method works because AppleShare client software on the older computer can connect to a Tiger computer over TCP/IP, even if it can't offer service over TCP/IP."

"This may also affect third-party AFP server products. Be aware that some affected AFP servers have a TCP/IP option, but others don't."

"Some AFP services that do not have a TCP/IP option include Personal File Sharing in Mac OS 8.6 and earlier, and the AppleShare server suite. Some AFP services that do have a TCP/IP option include Mac OS 9 File Sharing, and the AppleShare IP server suite."

So, I'm assuming the 'updated browser' that Dan mentioned is this 'Appleshare IP server suite', but there seems to be no place to download it from apple's web site--they only have updaters for those with previous versions of IP. They do mention places to get appleshare IP without updates, but those links are dead. Anyone know where to download appleshare IP for free or very cheap? Can't find it a LEM either. Do you think this will enable the 2 computers to share files?

Thanks, Guy
