You might remember Greg Earle mentioning the event on June 30
in LA with Doc Martin and DJ Pierre. I did indeed go and had a
great time. Doc is doing straight-up underground warehouse
parties every two or three months -- 20 bucks to get in, good
sound, a few lights, cheap drinks, no hassles from the po-po. It
wasn't just a revival of the thing that got me into all this, it was
--all-- that.
Pierre was great, really the best set I've heard him play. The
event was billed as the 20th anniversary of acid house, and unlike
other Pierre sets, he played acid, and played it and played it,
old and new. Doc was also on par, playing more of a variety
but with quite a lot of old stuff and he made everyone's jaw
drop (or laugh out loud, or both) when he slyly mixed in Stakka
Humanoid, a very non-Doc-like thing to play.
The great thing about acid house is that the non-cheesy tracks
(and there were a gazillion of the cheesy ones) always sound good,
but on a proper sound system they evolve Transformer-like into
these sonic beings with the bass coming from over here and
the drums over there and the acid line up above. Freak the house!
