Hey all,
On another list ([EMAIL PROTECTED], 404 members), there's an
interesting thread of conversation going on about how Detroit techno is not
as popular in the party scene as it once was. Here's an interesting point
one of the listmembers made, and my response.

Oh but it's not that they can't get a gig! It's that they are respected
and treated well overseas, while at home they are asked to play for small
sums by sketchy would-be promoters who can't provide good production
standards and equipment, f**k with their timeslots,
have to be chased around the venue to get their agreed-upon payment for the
night, etc etc.
I'm not a big fan of techno anymore (though I still pull out my old
techno mixtapes once in a while) - I've found my calling and it's HOUSE -
but there ARE people who want to hear it. It's just that most old-school
Detroit promoters gave up long ago, and the new school doesn't appreciate it
enough to develop good working relationships with the founders who reside
here.
It wasn't that long ago (three years, maybe?), when I would go to
parties and almost ALL the music was techno. In fact, at the first
Spacewalk, it was SUCH a big deal to see Frankie Bones, and he wasn't even a
Detroit techno DJ! I think the last party I recall that really went off to
techno was Element 5, with Twonz and Murat, back in April of 1998.
