Someone mentioned 'Lectric workers' "Robot is systematic", a superclassic
from '82 (Discomagic). That's the kind of sound I'm after. Just after when
HI-NRG / Patrick Cowley -sound was makin' huge waves in Italy, they took
that sound and basically Italo-disco was born. It slowed down during the
eighties in terms of BPM.
Couple of interesting records come to mind:
*Mr. Flagio -"Take a chance" (Squish 1983) -This is a rework of the Bill
Laswell classic, that I think is even better! Superb vocoder use,
unbelievable early 80's feel... in the same vein as Charivari.
*Gay cat park -"I'm a vocoder" -Ridiculous record where the guy sings he's a
vocoder. Rude sounds, underlined dark HI-NRG feel to it. Something that
could have been released on Viewlexx, it's that "fresh" in terms of sounds /
attitude.
*Bo boss -"Tequila" (Il discotto -1983 if I remember) -A freak record that
to many sounds silly but if you dig Dance Mania, you should like this. It's
a cover of course from that classic Tequila tune, a tongue in cheek party
record.
*D.F. & Pam -"On the beat" -Simply a powerful record, well constructed and
there's some good ol' slap bass there as well.
*Dharma -"Plastic doll" -They pumped this in Chicago in the early eighties,
and it's obvious why. It has same kind of analogue sequences and feel like
in John Robie / John Rocca / N.Y. electro -stuff. And who doesn't love that!
*Capricorn -"I need love" -Another Chicago-fave. I bet many have heard this
they just don't know it. It fits perfectly in the
Music box / Paradise garage / Trocadero -atmosphere. There's a lovely SEX
charge that has: "made in the 80's" written all over it.
"I need love, love, love. I need love when I'm close to your body"...
Excellent!
*Flexx -"Love theme from Flexxy-ball" -O'my GOD! If you like strings then
you like this. Outstandind song. You could drop the instrumental (which I
prefer) anytime with your Chicago classics and there would be people asking
"whatta hell is that!" It puts the shivers in your spine!!!
-And so on. There's lot more of course. I could suggest Alexander Robotnick
if you haven't already heard of him? "Problemes D'amour" and "Computer
sourire" were biggest hits, being one of the first records to use 303 (in
1982 & 83). His LP is also worth checking, there freaky Detroit / MOJO
-spirited tracks there including the hits.
Italo disco -freaks don't consider Alexander Robotnick to be Italo disco
even though he's italian and FUZZ DANCE is italian label...?
The tracks mentioned above reflect my own taste, so I don't know what other
people are after when they look for Italo-disco.
