Being the one who called it an instant classic (well, actually that
was said of the first single, Flying High), I'll comment. ;)
Here's the review which appeared in XLR8R:
P'taah - Compressed Light (Ubiquity)
Wamdue Kid Chris Brann here under his P'taah guise, staying just
ahead of our time with a debut album sure to be one of the year's
highlights. Eschewing the more straight ahead house flavor of his
work with Wamdue, the brother's working it out here by journeying to
the outside, exploring breaks and percussion with jazz
instrumentation and electronics. Tending his musical garden with a
little bit of Pharaoh Sanders (check sax player David Hughes' Indian
raga influenced playing), Herbie Hancock, and Lonnie Liston-Smith,
Brann's drawing from jazz sources experienced through the
bouillabaisse of drum and bass - evoking the originators in the way 4
Hero and Ashley Beedle do. Beedle's set to turn in a remix for the
LP's first single, and Nubian Mindz, Kirk Degiorgio, and Chareau
Flight are lined up for mixes as well. (On the mix front, don't miss
P'taah's stunning retake of i:Cube's Adore) Avant funk, and very
definitely the next shit.
