dont be so quick to balme Jeff for the final cost of his records. he has
no control over what price a record shop chooses to sell his records for.
heres a simplistic breakdown of how records are marked up before they
arrive in our hands; the record label pays to have the records pressed
(essentially "buying" them from the pressing plant) then they are sold to
the distributor at a markup from the pressing cost. the distributors then
sells them directly to the shops (marked up again). the shop then puts a
price tag on the jacket with yet another markup factored in. so every time
a record exchanges hands in its swim upstream it's "value" is increased.
but once we, the consumers, get our hands on it and take it out of the
shop its' vlaue reverts back to it's original cost (it's now a "used"
record :^)
I doubt that distributors would stand for such a huge cost difference when
purchasing this record from the record company so the huge markup must've
happened somewhere else in the chain?
