Bertelsmann, the German media company which owns several record labels, is buying up online music retailer CDNow for $3 a share, or a total cash outlay of $117million. CDNow has been swimming in red ink for months gets a big daddy to take over all those nagging economic problems and will continue to operate under its own name. Bertelsmann gets a known Web quantity, albeit a not-very-successful one (but then again, what is?) and an immediately online retail storefront likely for less cash than it would have paid to build one itself.
