MAROONED

Marooned is the musical vision of producer, remixer, songwriter, keyboardist and composer, the multi-titled John Briggs. The debut CD, "Marooned" features a fusion of world, acid-jazz, electronic and ambient music. It is one of the most original recordings to be created out ot this area in quite some time.

John worked in earlier musical projects, Sight & Sore Eyes, a multi-media performance combining art, poetry and music, and Voices of Ambience (with members of Code Industry) before it eventually evolved into Marooned. "The main thing I'm in it for is the music; I always knew I was going to do music," John says about the projects. "The 'Marooned' CD is experiments I put together, working with different people and sounds." The CD begins with soulful vocals drifting over ambient soundscapes colliding into melodic electro-jazz and ending up with a British R&B feel. John calls it "jazzy world pop electronica."

The CD features the talents of various musicians. Each musician adds their distinct elements to the sound. "I like to work with others; the band itself is a good way of networking." "Marooned" also showcases the vocals of Kimberly Ballard, whose voice highlights the music. The band currently consists of John on keyboards, Joe Hayden on bass, percussionist Dennis Sheridan, guitarist Tony Drake and vocalists: Kimberly Ballard, Rene Wade and Tunisia Fowler.

John's musical insight is one many musicians tend to overlook, "to work in the present and just let the music flow." The controlled chaos can be felt in the songs. "If you're not motivated by it, impressed by it or excited by your music, don't expect others to be either," John says.

The next release, planned for early '98, is an E.P. of remixes from the CD and new songs which will be more streamlined and dance oriented. In the meantime, John plans to perform with Marooned at clubs here and around the region. "Getting the CD out so people can hear it" is foremost, he adds.

John is as well known for his studio work as he is for music. An accomplished remixer, he has remixed songs for various groups including Skinhorse, Randloph's Grin, Code Industry and recently the work of techno DJ, Carl Craig. "It's the best way to wrok with groups I like without being in the band." He specializes in the re-construction of music and songs, adding sounds and embellishing the material.

When asked to share his advice with other musicians he offers "Step out of you music emotionally and look at it objectively. Ask yourself 'would I buy this?' If so, pursue the music professionally," adding "If you say 'I wouldn't,' then it's OK to be a fan; there's nothing wrong with being a music lover."

The Marooned CD is available at Harmony House and most independent record stores. Contact the group at:

marooned performed a dope live set at lifesoundtrax's 'below the surface' event the friday of demf. it was only john briggs, if i remember correctly.

also of interest: marooned's bassist joe hayden is currently tearin' sh*t up in soul clique. (another detroit band who have two 'must-buy' cd's & are 'must-see' live. go to www.smallstone.com/soulclique/)

i don't know if the '98 ep referred to in the above article ever came out, or if the cd is still available at harmony house. if it is, and you're into some quality downtempo jazz-oriented stuff, pick it up.

Hello,

A friend of mine recently played a disc of a Detroit group named
Marooned. I am not familiar with this groups work, and any info would be
appreciated. I noticed that Tony Drake Played keyboard on the album,
which I thought was interesting.

While I am on the subject of Tony Drake, does anybody have a discography
of his? Also, how is Textures, I have yet to hear it.

Take care,
Mike Taylor

Slowdive kicks ass.
