Dutch Dj's Visit CERN.

Since its foundation in 1952, the laboratories of CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherge Nucléaire) near Geneva gave shelter to quite a few remarkable physicists. Two of them visit CERN right now: dutch electronic musicians Danny Blanco (aka Legowelt) and Brian Chinetti (aka Orgue Electronique) from the Netherlands are involved in the Quark research project. Danny tells: “We work with he LEP (Large Electron - Positron collider) which basically makes two intense bundles of particles collide. Detectors measure the consequences of the impact. After thirteen years the LEP accelerator will be replaced in November by a new one. That’s the reason why we are here. Finally we have the unique chance to work the LEP accelerator at full capacity, try to produce the highest energy possible with this technique. We'll make measurements until it collapses. Haha”. Brian laughs: “We make the particles move at the speed of light. Since there is no higher speed than that, we are in search of techniques providing particles with more and more energy. Now use magnets in a 27km long tunnel; in the future we'll do that by letting them 'surf' on radio waves. A higher frequency gives more energy per second to the particles. The trick is to try and slap the particle as much as you can, in the shortest time possible. And when the particles collide, we measure the precise energy that came free and define the mass of the particles." The two Dutchmen are a rather strange sight in the tunnels of CERN. Their sharp suits and 'flashy' car (an Opel Manta) are not the looks you expect from two physicists. Why did the musicians visit CERN? Danny: “Because we seek ultimate beauty, the essence of nature in its most direct form. We like to discover things." Legowelt and Orgue Electronique will be slapping particles untill the end of August. After that they will return to their music and perform live in Geneva and Zurich.
