Modulations was really a sort of beginners guide electronic music - I thought
it lacked depth even though it set out to be comprehensive. The Planet Rock
volume in the Dancing On The Street series is quite good, with a clear
perspective of electronic music and its cultural significance in comparison
to other genres. There was also a documentary called Techno Mania - which
looked more into the European explosion of electronic music spanning from the
synth era/ industrial/ acid house/ hardcore techno.

The best documentary I've seen so far on electronic music is called Universal
Techno, which was shown here on SBSTV. (and I remember posting a question to
the list whether anyone had seen it outside of Australia). It is quite a
comprehensive journey into the realm of the intricate electronic scene
spanning the most important techno global hotspots from Detroit, Tokyo,
Frankfurt, Berlin and Sheffield. It also features some exclusive interviews
with Mad Mike Banks, Kevin Sauderson talking outside Submerge, Blake Baxter
inside Hardwax and outside Tresor, Autechre, Richie Hawtin... Ken Ishii live,
a look into Kenny Larkin's studio and also his red sportscar with Azimuth as
the number plate (Anyone seen this wizzing around in Michigan?). Rather than
concentrate too much on the history/ culture - it goes pretty much straight
into the heart of the matter - The Music and the Musicians.

Somewhere midway Derrick May talks to a rather aged man with a Planet E cap
who describes the existence of a 10th planet and how it's meant to represent
this music we called techno.

I still wonder how much more he knows.
