...this is very true!!! I had the experience of seeing both Surgeon & James
Ruskin (round
about March/April this year) on the same night one after the other. I'd seen
Surgeon before
and he had been quite good, but nothing outstanding. James Ruskin, I hadn't
seen at all and to
be honest I wasn't expecting much more than 'heads down' - BANG...BANG...BANG
all night long
(too hard for too long, not much else happening scenario). After the warm up
(courtesy of
Stuart McMillan - brilliant as always) Surgeon was on first and was quite good
but a bit too
many of the 'cut and paste' mixes, sometimes too frantic for the more melodic
stuff to get
breathing space. Don't remember the tune selection being inspiring either. By
the end of his
set he playing more of the harder percussive stuff and the crowd was into it
(including me I
might add). James Ruskin then came on and was really really good, I was highly
impressed. It
just suddenly got funkier when he was on and he was really working the mixer to
get the most
out of his music - sometimes subtle, sometimes cutting it up - but always
keeping you guessing.
Can't really remember now what they were playing other than James Ruskin
finished with
Planetary Assault Systems "Voodoo" on Peacefrog, I only remeber this as it's
just about the
most mental tune ever, but still funky. I think as long as they play in that
order, it would
definitely be worthwhile to see.

Cheers,

Niall.
