Depending on what state you live in here in the USA, you can get into a GROUP
Insurance plan at a low monthly rate. For example, some insurance companies
offer a group insurance rate for those who are Self-employed. Well, if you
are a musician, producer, DJ, etc., aren't you working for yourself? Well
then, you can get into a group insurance plan which offers coverage as low as
$40 bucks a month, and
a 80/20 co-pay on prescription drugs. The catch is that you must have a
checking account because most companies offering such low rates want to
deduct the monies directly from your account.

I know it's not easy. When my daughter was born, my wife and I had no
insurance at all. The prenatal care alone was $2500 dollars. It was a
blessing from God that I signed a deal with Sony Music 6 months before my
little girl was born, and thus was able to pay the $11,000 dollar hospital
bill by simply writing a check. But then after I left Sony in 1994, I was no
longer able to afford health coverage. I couldn't afford to think about
buying new gear because I had a little one to think about. I figured if I
could afford it, I would do my best to make certain my daughter had health
coverage, while I just took my chances. But then while checking into it, I
found out that there are many different programs for GROUP Health coverage
(which is far cheaper than paying for an individual plan). I found much of
this info out by checking with the local chamber of commerce. But everyone
doesn't know where to look for such plans. In today's world, you can research
much of this info on the Internet.

After I walked away from Sony, times were extremely hard for me and my
family. However, although it was a struggle, I was able to maintain insurance
for my little girl at first, and later, coverage for my entire family through
a Self-employed Group Plan.
No one expects that they will suddenly need major health care. But it is
something to think about.

:-)

peace & respect,

TP
