I think this is interesting. I work for a Fortune 25 company. We have 85,000
employees. We have or have had nearly 100 subsidiaries. Without being
specific, I can tell you that different segments of the company have much
worse track records than others. There is no "single mind" behind
corporations. They are political products as much as a government. The
management model for the federal government is even becoming more like
corporations by the day. The DOD is even outsourcing systems work to one of
our companies - the Depeartment of Defense is outsourcing and "they" predict
this will start a trend. But anyway, you have all sorts of decisions made on
a daily basis that don't even get direct approval from a vice president, if
even a director. Chances are, the playstation division knows less about UR
than any of us do, and Derrick May has had some kind of a relationship with
them for some time - at least dating back to the video game soundtrack he
contributed tracks to. This may have been an agreement with the software
company, but he's clearly shown an interest in the Playstation in
particular.

When I first heard about the Jaguar ripoff I thought I would boycott Sony
and skip the Playstation 2. But I think it's ineffective to boycott a
division of a company that's completely removed from the offensive division.
It does them no harm to them at all as long as they meet their budget.
Should we boycott BMG (I think that was their name)? I doubt we'd be buying
much from them anyway. This raises the question of how you respond to
corporations that have no single accountable face. As corporations begin to
exert almost as much control over our lives as the government I think this
question needs an answer. I don't have it. I don't think this is the place
to discuss it at length, but I thought I'd offer a corporate insiders
perspective on the whole deal, and offer up that there aren't any easy
answers, perhaps in hopes of preventing a lengthy flame war in advance.
State and Federal regulators deal with this sort of problem daily with
little success.

As you might be able to figure out if you looked closely enough at this
message, I work for WorldCom. If you're curious how I balance my disdain for
mega-corporations and conscience working for one at the same time, I act in
a consumer advocacy role for the company, and getting that job is what keeps
me there.
