Actually, I have a Yamaha QY10 (I misremembered the number), and it does
run off batteries. It's about the size and thickness of a small book.
The later models may be smaller and easier to deal with. I bought the
thing as a simple and self-contained intro into track-making in my
abundant spare time (HA!).
In my opinion, anything is going to be a pain on the train standing up,
especially in the usual a**es and elbows situation. I'd just bring a
book. If you want to mix tracks instead of make them, I can't help you,
because I don't go there (the digital DJ stuff, that is). I still insist
on physical media, as I consider the other alternatives to be just more
dicking around with computers, and I do enough of that as it is on the
job. It just isn't fun for me, and I wouldn't bother with the DJ thing
if not for the fun factor. I actually got back into radio DJing (
busting my butt to do so) after a 5-year hiatus because I missed
slinging records around. I run into the same situation with
photography, but don't get me started. I guess I'm just a hopeless old
fart and antiquarian - take me out and shoot me...

anyway, those are all a little unwieldy for standing on the train.
also they don't run on batteries, i don't think?

Why not one of those little beat composer packages like the Yamaha SY10 and
its descendents? You could have fun mucking around on the train and gin up a
few tracks while you're at it ( that is, once you get past the unser
interface).

nice. i wouldn't trade my mixer and three turntables for the world, i
just want a toy to play with on the train. i often find myself
wishing my ipod had mixing and looping abilities. i'd get a lot more
done musically if i had a hand held tunes tool/toy!

Choosing between an IPhone or Tonium and some new Ortofons, I'd go
with the Ortofons ;-)
I've not used either of those gizmos, but my old-man eyes and clumsy
fingers would make them both frustrating to use. Plus you'll never
drop your mixer and 1200s in the toilet accidentally.

Slightly OT - I'm in the market for a DJ toy and/or smart phone (ha!
smart phone!) and I'm considering getting an iPhone 3Gs, or possibly
saving a little more and getting a Tonium Pacemaker. Granted, these
two devices are almost nothing alike so it might not make sense to be
choosing between the two. What I want to know though is if there are
any mp3 based DJ mixer apps for the iPhone that do <basically> what
the Pacemaker does? I tried googling but didn't come up with much of
anything useful. I'm mostly interested in the idea of being able to
beatmatch and mix tracks while on the train, mostly for entertainment
purposes and to sketch out rough ideas. Also, if anybody knows of any
really fantastic music apps other than djing, that would be valuable
info too. Thanks!
