Last week's Wild Kingdom grew out of a classic seed 12" - 2000 and One's
"Never Ending Cycle" 12" on Eevolute. It's been recently reissued, so if
you dig the old stuff, you're in luck. To view what happened after that,
go to http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=33646 . If you want to
listen, read on. This week's Wild Kingdom ushers in fundraiser season at
KFJC - if we didn't need the money, I wouldn't be in your face asking
for it. With that in mind, and since it's coming up on the 50th
anniversary for the station (next month!), I thought I'd start the show
by doing a set of classic old stuff. circa '80-'84. KFJC has introduced
me to a universe of unique tunes. I'm quite sure that if I'd never
listened to KFJC, it never would have occurred to me that I could
possibly be a DJ (it took about 10 years of listening even then - I'm
kinda slow). I discovered techno/ambient/idm as expounded on these lists
by chance in 1993, and by direct consequence of my involvement with KFJC
( I was looking for Moonshake 12"s for a special feature, and Mike at
Mod Laing Records in Berkeley, CA turned me on to a lot of the early
releases from Warp/Apollo/GPR, among others). Mike later went on to
found Oakland's Drop Beat Records. Anyway, It all snowballed from there,
and KFJC prepared the ground on which those seeds sprouted. So, to start
the Wild Kingdom tomorrow night, I'll be playing a set of Pop/New
Wave/Electronic tunes from the likes of Talking Heads, Bill Nelson,
Kraftwerk, The Cure, The Passions, New Order, Essential Logic, A Certain
Ratio, XTC, Andreas Dorau, Peter Gabriel, DAF, etc. Expect odd B sides
and obscure releases, as well as some of the usual suspects.
If you miss a show, or want to sample other aspects of KFJC, limited
time archives for KFJC programming are available at
http://www.kfjc.org/broadcast_archives/ . Send comments and suggestions
to [email protected] .
"The Wild Kingdom" airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday Morning,
12A-3A (8A-10A GMT). (This may change...) Potential listeners outside
the San Francisco Bay area can find a webcast at
http://www.kfjc.org/netcast/index.php . Present and past Wild Kingdom
playlists are also archived at kfjc.org. You can also check out archived
playlists from my first KFJC show "Just Desserts" that was on Fridays
10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived playlists exist for that show
starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve 1999/2000, so you can see what
what I'm up to these days is pretty much consistent with what I was up
to all along.
If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some promotion for an event, contact the KFJC
promotions department at [email protected] to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.

Richard Hester
