For the past few weeks, I've been doing my rag-tag version of a tribute
to KFJC's 50th anniversary, tracing my involvement with
techno/ambient/IDM and all that since I stumbled across it inadvertently
(and somewhat belatedly) in the summer of '93. I really got into it big
time in '94, so the game plan is to do commemorative sets based the
Mayhem specials I did for that year. For some of the history behind the
"Month of Mayhem" (May has traditionally been specials month at KFJC
since around 1983), check www.kfjc.org - it's there someplace, and you
just might have some fun in the search.
Last week feature a set that briefly skimmed some of the highlights of a
four-part ambient special presented in May 1994, featuring
interviews/on-air appearances from Alex Paterson, Mixmaster Morris Jonah
Sharp, Mike Barnett of Birmingham's Beyond Records, Greg Scanavino/Young
American Primitive, the Hardkiss posse, and others. The set list is at
http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=33897 . The archive can be
found at the address shown below.
In 1995, I did a massive Detroit techno retrospective, with interviews
from Juan Atkins, Mike Banks, Eddie Fowlkes, Carl Craig, Alan Oldham,
Blake Baxter, and Sean Deason, all of this made possible with the help
of Laura Gavoor at Yin-Sight Management (RIP, Laura, you're missed) .
Tonight's show will touch on a a little bit of the music from the
special. Even though it's a four hour show tonight because of the time
change, I'll only be able to barely scratch the surface - I may do a
part 2 next week.
KFJC is in the midst of their annual fundraiser. If the spirit moves
you, give us a hand.
If you miss a show, or want to sample other aspects of KFJC, limited
time archives for KFJC programming are available at
http://www.kfjc.org/broadcast_archives/ . Send comments and suggestions
to [email protected] .
"The Wild Kingdom" airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday Morning,
12A-3A (8A-10A GMT). Potential listeners outside the San Francisco Bay
area can find a webcast at http://www.kfjc.org/netcast/index.php .
Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived at kfjc.org.
You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show "Just
Desserts" that was on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived
playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve
1999/2000, so you can see what what I'm up to these days is pretty much
consistent with what I was up to all along.
If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some promotion for an event, contact the KFJC
promotions department at [email protected] to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.
Regards,
Richard Hester
