Thanks, Fred for writing this. I discovered Go Go myself the way I find a lot of interesting music: I go through record piles at thrift stores. Iowa City being the crossroads of the world (sort of) apparently a DC expat dumped some vinyl when his turntable broke and I found a bunch of Go Go records.
Go Go is great music because it's great music, but it's an example of something I wish there was more of in the world: music with a sense of place. Chicago and Detroit are obvious examples in the world of dance music, but I suspect that pretty much every urban area has something the locals love that hasn't really made it out of the neighborhood. I don't know what we've got in Iowa. A lot of folkie singer-songwriters, but I have a hard time identifying that as being unique to Iowa. Not having a proper big city may be the thing. All we have is Des Moines, but the only cultural advantage of Des Moines is the Tasty Taco chain.
