> Not to turn Tone Shifting into a film theory debate,

especially here ;)

You have good points, I choose the wrong words perhaps...

I'm not concerned with Spielberge's intended meaning, I'm concerned with the
[un]intentional effect - the effect of total realism in that film. People,
such as artists or directors, may do things for often different reasons that
they say, even if they have no idea what that hidden reason is...

As far as your bringing up effects in music, you have points there too,
adding definition to where there is little. When richie (he's the best
person to discuss because he is so well known) uses effects, perhaps we can
say that those moments are him speaking out to the crowd, or him telling the
crowd to do something, then when he bangs the beat back in (like he does so
well;), the listener is thrown back into there own creative state, returned
to the state of the toneshift. So the use of effects, are like tossing the
creative process back and forth, from artist to listener - interaction...

when a person over uses an effect, the crowd tends to get annoyed, perhaps
this is because there is too much artist definition when the listening mind
wants more freedom? I think maybe...

Back to speilberge for a sec. Could it not be considered that the red dress
was the one moment where spielberge spoke out his views, comparable to
richie doing effects or playing nitzer ebb? The one moment where the artist
wants to tell his total view?
