Chicks on Speed - girl power of another kind

Club Telex proudly presents in March, in close collaboration with the
Tampere International Short Film Festival, Chicks on Speed from Berlin,
whose electronic Riot Grrrl style has already made waves in such
international trend magazines as NME, Muzik and The Face. At last summer's
Sonar festival of Barcelona the Chicks made a crowd of 6,000 Spaniards go
berserk; in November it was time to confuse the Japanese audiences, and
after Finland follows Chicks On Speed's first-ever North American tour.

Chicks on Speed combine to the modern electronic style the Do-It-Yourself
punk aesthetics of 1970s/80s, which one can hear and see both in their
music and visual outlook. The energetic girl trio mixes ruthlessly in
their spectacular stage act as diverse musical styles as pop, electro,
house, punk, hardcore techno and even speed metal; not to mention their
stage costumes in genuine trash glamour spirit and the
all-senses-shattering background projections.

Chicks on Speed was started in 1997, when the Australian Alex
Murray-Leslie and American Melissa Logan, both studying at the Munich
Academy of Arts, were joined by the German Kiki Moorse.

Chicks on Speed design their own stage costumes, videos and the graphic
outlook of their releases, also arranging alongside live stage acts
performances at art galleries, which often present the band's own visual
art; among them the confounding 10-feet "Monsters" collages such as "The
Boob Monster".

Through their Internet shop the many-sided girl trio sells not only music,
but also their self-designed clothes, graphics and other merchandise.

The music for Chicks on Speed has been produced by the creme de la creme
of Central European electronic luminaries, but lyrics and the style of
their tracks is firmly dictated by CoS themselves. It is no surprise that
Chicks on Speed has been characterised as a sort of an "anti-Spice Girls".
The act has covered such New Wave classics as B52's, Camper Van Beethoven
and The Normal, also such half-forgotten greats as Delta 5 and Malaria!.

In Tampere, alongside Chicks on Speed live performance, a selection of
their best experimental videos is seen.
