i saw that Snoop performance about six or seven years ago, with the live band. it did sound bad, but that's because you're trying to reproduce electronic sounds, with no live instrument influence. of course it's going to sound bad.
what's wrong with R&B/rappers doing live instrument music? Mos Def did it on the Tonight Show a few weeks ago and it sounded smooth as hell.
