Various - 2000Black "the GoodGood" - 2x12" - 2000 Black - blacklp01
After nine juicey pieces of vinyl, the sweet, soft and gentle 2000 Black
label comes with their first compilation album. Whereas the cd comes as
well with some highlights of the vinyl back cat, the this double vinyl
brings new stuff of most of the stars of the roster. Fine cuts by Domu,
Nubian Mindz and also including a gorgeous remake of Jon Coltrane's Naima
and a collaboration with Roy Ayers. Absolutely wicked stuff, pushing
boundaries in between of jazz and electronics. Recommended stuff!
Moodymann - Forevernevermore - CD - Peacefrog - pf095cd
Second or third album by Kenny Dixon Jr? Well, although it got lots of
already released material, I still find it more then the other two this
more then a collection of tracks. Again it sound slike house, but again
it's much more of soul and funk as well. And who still needs an
introduction to the magicness of this geezer, should be ashamed and run
fast, faster to the nearest. Absolutely lovely. Soul for 2001, much respect.
Tate's Place - Burnin' (Jazzanova mix) - 12" - Dynamite Joint - dyn002
Tate's Place's fine tune Burnin' already got some remixes done by As One,
as 10" out.. This time the cool geezers from Berlin take control of the
remix board, putting it into a really breathtaking discostyled, deep funky
tune. As ever too tight, clean production making them some of the best
around. Catch it if you can. Soulful tunes.
Future Beat Alliance - Audio Photos - 12" - Delsin Records - 12dsr/fba1
Even not that long ago Matthew Puffett was caught into the 4/4 -meausure
and did he publish soulful techno records on his label Void. The atmosphere
is still there, but nowadays the South England mr Puffett even more exiting
rhythms out of his toolbox. Audio Photos sounds like a sequal to Carl
Craigs Jazz Funk Classics. (Rene)
Madcap - The Solid Sender - 12" - Music for Speakers - mfs06ep
Sixth release already on the Dutch Music for Speakers label. Madcap
consists of Richard Hermes and Felix van de Vorst, and their music have
always been too hard to pigeonhole. Again with this twelve, the serach for
beauty seems all around, highliting it the beautiful moody St. Vitus'
dance. Other tracks have the same freestyle approach as their previous
outings. Adventurous music.
Pure Filth/Ne-Grove - Should've been you - 12" - People - people18
With each release the People label keeps suprising, going diverse ways,
while keeping the the same gorgeous vibe. This track comes pretty easily in
vocal and instrumental version. Deeply it goes into funky seventies disco
style, with smooth catchy chords/strings on top. The contrast with the
vocals is very breahting which makes it even moe nice. Maybe this is even
pop music. Tasty things!
Mark de Clive-Lowe - El Dia Perfecto - 12" - Universal - 1580501
One of the finest producers around is Mark de Clive-Lowe. His very smooth
combination of electronics and exotic sounds is again proved with these
warm, wonderful tracks. Side a goes in a very Jazzanova kind of way, light
wieght flowing vocals, along with lots of percussion and deeply jazzy and
funky. Side b goes deeply downtempo, freestyler funk and space jamming all
around. Very looking forward to an album. Gorgeous.
Recloose - Can't take it remixes - 12" - Planet E - pe65257
Recloose's fine tune Can't take it goes into remix mode. Remix duties are
taken by Recloose himself, mr Herbert from the UK, and Planet E-maestro
himself. The Recloose imx brings the most housey side of Matt above, with
still keeping the Recloose twids. Herbert takes the vocals and others into
sampling mode, very nice as well. Personal highlight is Carl Craig's mix,
going deeply dreamy, repetive, hypnotizing, coming close to his classic
Crackdown remix. All mixes are very, very tasty. A brilliant juicy record!
Nubian Mindz - Check da Vibe - 12" - 2000 Black - 2010black
One sided record, being the tenth 2000 Black outing. With this track Colin
Lindo comes very close to his Alpha Omega thing, as it goes pretty uptempo
and raw. As in more drum 'n bass records lately, some old school rave
feeling is all around. Raw and straight in your face. Nubian Mindz takes it
back to basics, vocal samples, thick basslines, raw beats. Energetic thing.
Very worth purchasing, check da vibe.
Time Undefined - Calling You EP - 12" - Metamorphic - met014
More new stuff on the Metamorphic label. With it's jamming hihats goes in
old-school chigago-mode a little, while the other parts of the track bring
back memories to early nineties house stuff. Calling You is the nicest
track around, as the sample on side b goes somewhat too way back. But nice
record nevertheless, from the housey side of Dan Curtin.
EU - Reframing - CD - Pause 2 - pause003
EU are from Russia, and go deeply in an Arovane, Autechre kind of way. But
luckily with enough originality and soul to make it very interesting. Very
smooth, fine warm melodies are going round, with fine soft rhythms along.
Good to see sounds going very global. Looking forward for more. Very good
and decent stuff.
+One - Bare Necessities - LP - deFocus - foc357lp
Have been looking forward to this one for a long time, also knowning it's
made with a little help from the Plaid brothers. +One is Shaun Spencer, and
he brings us fragile, classic sounding electronica all around, taking off
somewhat thin, but going deeply smooth further on. Coming close to label
brothers Lackluster and Cim, but undoubtly Plaid as well. Personal
highlights are Shao, Metro, and Mayday of course. Beautiful listening stuff.
