I'd have to beg to differ. He had everything to do with techno as it was
then defined from about '92-'94 (if you don't agree it was good, that
doesn't mean it didn't fit with the definition of the term at that time). It
may not have been Detroit techno in the purist sense, but it was techno. It
wasn't until "Move" (I think it was called) that he started to incorporate
live instruments and turn his back on the techno community. That's when he
started to live out his long-time dream of being in a punk band, but trying
to do it himself with electronics. At that point, I don't think you could
really fault his shift in direction even though I can't really listen to
most of that stuff anymore.

Next is the E is another example of a Moby techno song, along with the rest
of that EP. Hell, I still listen to his "Ambient" album, which is oddly
misnamed (even as that term was being losely thrown around back then). Some
of it sounds like a weird cross between Plastikman and Model 500. It has a
similar feel to "Deep Space" IMO, altough nowhere near the complexity, depth
or importance to the future of techno. That's his best work by far IMO.

I think to give the man a fair criticism, you need to give him his due for
what he once was to techno. He was no Messiah to the techno world, but he
was a relatively important figure. IMO, that makes his moves over the last
5-6 years that much more unappealing than if he was irrelevant the whole
time.

Let's try not to turn this into Moby flame vol. VI. Please?
