CARL CRAIG - D.E.M.F CO-FOUNDER TAKES LEGAL ACTIONDEMF CO-FOUNDER + CREATIVE
DIRECTOR TAKES LEGAL ACTION AGAINST FESTIVAL
PRODUCER.

Thursday 10th May 2001, at 2.00pm:
After months of creative differences with Pop Culture Media (D.E.M.F.
producers), Carl Craig received notice terminating his work as Creative
Director of the D.E.M.F. Pop Culture Media informed him that from May 30th
2001 his employment would end, it also states that he is to cease all
festival activities immediately.

4.00 pm the same afternoon:
Craig was contacted by local daily newspaper, the Detroit Free Press. The
journalist informed Craig that the story of his firing had been leaked to
the press and an article containing comments from festival director, Carol
Marvin and city official Phil Talbert was being written for release.

Friday 11th May:
The Detroit Free Press article was released - the result was shock and
outrage. Marvin, the producer of the festival, made statements to the
newspaper claiming that Craig had not met city deadlines and he had been
asked to stand down. Craig maintains that Marvin's statements are false and
were made to defame him, "I was not made aware of any city imposed
deadline's in my employment contract or in writing"

Carl Craig is now suing Pop Culture Media for defamation of character and
breach of contract. Craig did not violate any aspect of his contract with
Pop Culture Media as Marvin has alleged. Craig believes that Marvin
orchestrated this action in order to damage Craig's reputation and to
undermine his instrumental role in conceiving and ensuring the festival's
success.

"Marvin acted recklessly, damaging the integrity of the D.E.M.F. and my own
reputation by acting with only two weeks left before the festival," Craig
said.

As creative director, Craig used his influence as a respected member of the
Detroit music community and as an internationally acclaimed artist to
generate credibility amongst potential performers and fans to attend the
festival. With Craig's name at the forefront, last year's festival attracted
an attendance of 1.1 million fans from around the world, bringing pride to
the city of Detroit and renewed interest in Detroit techno music. The timing
of Marvin's statements and allegations against Craig have caused many
scheduled artists of the D.E.M.F. 2001 to reconsider their performances.
Craig has encouraged them to continue their participation in this year's
show.

"I have chosen to be low key about the pressures that I have endured over
the last three months," Craig says. "A positive image and strong artist
lineup for the DEMF have always been my main concerns. This is my dream to
have my friends and family of the music community perform at Hart Plaza.
This festival is good for everyone and I hope that it will continue to be a
success."
