I have just recieved notice from DJ MG owner of the Underground Files that he had to bring his internet webcast down. A couple of months ago he and I recieved an email from BMI urging us to purchase a licence from them in order to broadcast over the internet. About a month later we both got a letter in the mail in regards to the same thing. After some research we discovered that the licence would cost $250 per year. Both of us ignored the letter, however this weekend MG recieved a certified notice from BMI, due to this he pulled the broadcast prtion of his site down. Have done some follow up research I found these two articles up at CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/industry/04/13/webcasting.royalties.idg/index.html

http://www.cnn.com/2000/TECH/computing/12/20/music.fees.idg/index.html

MG has been in contact with the owners of other sites like Gotta Have House and it seems we are all being hit with the same thing. What the f*^%k is going on. I urge all of you to follow up on this info. The future of Underground Radio is now under attack on the net. We couldn't get FCC licensing for FM broadcast and now we are being urged to pay fees to broadcast on the net. What is that? I can understand of you are making money off of your webcast but most of us do this simply to promote quality underground music.
