I'm driving up tomorrow from Iowa with Kent and Ryan Burns. I wouldn't miss DEMF for the world. Especially after the powerful feeling I was left with after last year's show.
But on one hand I've been quietly wondering, with hysteria in full bloom, that we've not heard much from Detroit techno fans in non-capitalist, command economy countries past and present. Places like China and Russia. I mean did *they* create techno? This intrigues me. Like K.Hand's statement about US DJs learning from their European peers, and list member's prior comments about how the club & rave business is conducted overseas it would seem that our own perception of the events surrounding DEMF01 are a bit colored by misgivings of involvement by corporate culture. In many ways, the creation and sustainability of Detroit music, from jazz to soul to Motown to techno, would not have been/will not be possible without the presence of Henry Ford's ideology and a market economy (amongst a myriad of other things). I guess this is just food for thought more than anything; I'm not trying to get flamed. On the other hand, it seems quite fitting that "Pop Culture" media represent just that, both at their electronic music festival and jazz festival. What's peculiar in this regard is that, in my estimation, Detroit is a modern epicenter for revolutionary, Underground artistic Resistance - especially when it comes to electronic music. Will the Assault Squadron be called up for a special battle to save their homelands from the Programmers? Stay tuned. More food for thought: UR 042 The Turning Point "Roots - without them you would be like a tree in a strong wind, easily blown over. Rhythms and music is our only surviving link to what we are and the only voice of our ancestors. And soul is the communication of their experiences. Without roots, music & soul we would be lost, blind, futureless and unable to overcome what we face daily." R 045 Interstellar Fugitives, Chuck Gibson aka Perception - Mirage Strategic Visual Diversions Specialist / S.I.D. sector "Everything you hear, may not be real. Look inside your soul, listen to your heart...it might be a mirage. Everything you see may not be real. Everything you read, may not be true. Look inside your soul, listen to your heart...it might be a mirage." PE65632 Carl Craig - More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art "Revolutionary art is not determined by its avant-garde content; nor its formal or technical trickery, its interpretation of reality, or its verisimilitude, but, rather, by how much it revolutionises our thinking and imagination; overturning our preconceptions, bias and prejudice and inspiring us to change ourselves and the world..."
