Believe it or not, the Transformers toys came out in the 70's. I remember seeing them advertised (though not called "Transformers") in some of my old Avengers and Thor comics. The copyright date on Starscream leg shows 197x (can't remember the exact date - I think it was '78). The comic book came out just after the cartoon. I was a rather avid comic book collector back then as well as a cartoon nut.
I'm sure that there's info to back this up out on the net. I'm just too lazy to try to find it.
