I was intensely pleased. For one, I happened to be off work (my early
get-up time and sleep disorder combined make most things - especially
midweek events - verboten for me). Second, there weren't a zillion people
smoking - in fact, there weren't a zillion people. Prolly 60 or so people
at DC, NOT crowded, plenty of room to sit on the floor - which most did (I
leaned on the back wall). It wasn't oppressively hot, either. The sound was
great - not too loud, but loud enough. Gentleman Clark was spinning a
selection most appropos for the event, mostly German styled stuffs, some
neodubbish things and classic BC styled selections in the entryway/gallery.
Maersk/Shaif did a short but intensely beautiful and dark set which was
also perfect for the event. WHEN WILL WE SEE A FULL LENGTH FROM
HIM??!! Based on what he dished out last night, it's way overdue.
Mr. Henke was all I expected and more. His use/love of nature
sounds is more apparent live than it is on record...lots of
water/air/thunder/crickets, often tweaked, phased, layered. He does a lot
of build-up/strip down stuff (duh!)...his music takes on a whole new
character when he "pulls the air out" of it, moving into a sort of stark
funk mode which emphasizes its "Germanness" for lack of terms. I liked the
way he'd re-inflate the mix and up the dub level at points, too. Afterwards
he was accessible, talkative and gregarious. I discovered that he used to
be a sound engineer working on films. Anyway, great gig. Props and kudos to
whomever set this up!!!!
