So's to console myself over my pitiful bank balance I just went out and bought some tunes. RUN and get Kirk DeGiorgio's "Nairobi" (UK Regal). The Carl Craig mix with it's hints of "No Way Back" is fantastic in itself but the original is to die for. One of the records of the year for me without a doubt. I also picked up Russ Gabriel's "Now I Can" EP (UK Nepenta) after hearing a track off it on a Red D mixtape. The other tracks are even better. KDJ's obviously an influence but its worthy in it's own right of plenty of playing out. If it wasn't for "Nairobi" I'd be stunned by this 12. Moodymann's own "Telephone Blue" is better than the reviews I'd heard suggested and finally Octave One's vocal mix of Blackwater is cool (though don't play it on a record player that plays as fast as the one in my office.) And they're all UK domestic releases! Wahey, says my wallet!
I had a cursory listen to the Other People Place and was disappointed, to be honest. Some good moments but a lot of pedestrian ones too, IMO. And when I'm skint I don't take risks like that ;) Larry Heard's getting my LP cash this month, if I can find a copy. An even skinter, Jonny. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
