Tomas Jirku, Safety Scissors and Sutekh all played Filler @ Blue Room in DC.
After seeing all three in the same order playing live the night before, it
was really wild seeing them DJ. Tomas Jirku played some really, really weird
stuff. I don't know where to even begin a description - he was all over the
abstract map, but mostly with downtempo beats. Quite a contrast from his
live set the night before. Safety Scissors started blaring an 80s punk/new
wave track. This was not your mother's electroclash - it was pretty severe.
:) Several people were seen cringeing, some people got up and danced. After
that he went everywhere from Technotronic (yes, he pumped up the jam) to
nosebleed IDM beets. This was really fun - that's about the only way I can
characterize it. Sutekh followed with more wide area coverage, but kept a
more consistent feel - also a lot of fun though. All three of these guys
DJed really well, despite the broad terrain. Filler resident, Milo took over
with the Hawtin remix of "Losing Control", and kept the
aisle-become-dancefloor alive until close. By 1:00, all of the performers
and the Filler regulars were wandering around with masking tape all over
themselves, which finally devolved into airborn tape balls zinging across
the club. Built by dorks, attended by dorks. Gotta love it. Lest we forget,
music can be a lot of fun. The following Monday's can be a very different
story though... ;)
