I think people need to also remember the situation with Jaguar at the time. If
UR had really wanted to 'sell out' and really capitalise on Jaguar, they could
have licensed it to Sony to begin with. Instead they refused, and in doing so
meant they had to fight them and later BMG tooth and nail to stop all the dodgy
remakes. Imagine how someone like Rolando must have felt whilst his lovingly
produced record was getting ripped off left right and centre but not recieveing
any credit. By that time the track had already gained a lot of attention due to
the inevitable publicity that URs fight with Sony had created, the way I always
saw the large scale release of Jaguar via 430 West over here was just UR
continuing the fight. It was like they beat Sony and then showed that they
could come out the shaddows momentarily and bite the big labels on the ass,
then slink back into the underground again. Then, as has been mentioned,
Submerge has been able to use Jaguar's success to help finance Submerge 3000
and Rolando has been able to set up Los Hermanos, and so much increddible
undergound music has come out of these camps since, and in part as a result of
Jaguar that I think any talk of UR having sold out is dismissed pretty quickly.
Yeah, its annoying to see a UR track mixed badly on some dodgy superclub
compilation, but until you see a version of Jupiter Jazz with Turbo B rapping
over the top and Mad Mike pretending to mix on top of the pops, I dont think
anyone has too much to worry about.
