One thing to keep in mind is that knobs and sliders on electronic gear, dj
gear, stereo gear often oxidize leaving you with a scratchy sound when
faders or knobs move. There are various sprays you can purchase at high end
audio stores that lubricate the faders and bring life back to them.
A great product a friend lent me is called Nutrol and it works wonders for
scratchy, worn out sounding faders.
Of course there are some crappy dj mixers out there that don't work properly
or comparatively to a more expensive mixer.

After the chats going on here recently - I was speaking to a good friend of
mine who runs a sound/light installation firm in scotland...he was saying
he's had loads of returns on the vestax PCV's :
