depends a lot where you're going to be... saying you'll be in LA is like
saying you'll be in rhode island. ;)

shopping... you might as well hit Melrose. there are several (questionable)
record stores along with a lot of shopping. actually it will probably
remind you some of uptown, only better. i'm talking about melrose roughly
between fairfax and la brea.

there's a solid record store in los feliz called vinyl fetish. it's at 1750
N Vermont ave. if you get out that far east, there's also some interesting
shopping in silver lake.

if you're closer to the west side, there's a decent record store in west LA
called higher source. it's at 1544 Purdue ave, just off santa monica blvd,
just west of the 405. around the corner is West LA Music, a very nice
equipment store. and if you've never been to the 3rd St. Promenade in santa
monica that's worth doing, just for general shopping.

as far as clubs on those nights of the week the only thing i can comfortably
recommend is Sugar in santa monica on tuesday night.
http://www.clubsugar.com/. tuesday is the moontribe night, so you get
something like house and desert breaks, whatever the hell that is. but
actually it's a very reliably fun night, the crowd is unpretentious and just
there to have fun, the music often isn't bad, and it's $2 to get in. it's
actually a very nice club as well... small, well done.
