Hi, Diana. Best thing about Montreal is the subway and
bus system can get you pretty much all over. If you're
staying in the old city, make sure you check out the
Atwater market for great fresh food. (I'm
geographicaly impaired, so Atwater and the old city
might be in different areas, but I can definitely vouch
for the Atwater market, whichever district it might be
in!) Casa Del Polpo is owned by a couple of the guys
in Godspeed You! Black Emperor and has great music and
tasty, inexpensive, healthy food, plus has super decor.
It's like a cafe type of atmosphere, but has good
electronic and hip hop acts. Very intimate. Former
Halifax-er Six Too is now living and performing there;
he's got a great new album coming out on Vertical Form
soon. SAT is an artspace that has good electronic and
hip hop shows. Blue Dog is a club that occasionally
has guest DJs in playing techno. Laika is worth
checking, good food and music, owned and frequented by
the SAT/MUTEK people. Your best bet is to pick up the
free weeklies when you arrive (Mirror, Hour, Voir, Ici)
and the free electronic music magazine (Nightlife) and
see who's playing where you're there. There are a lot
of great cd/vinyl shops, but I've got a horrible memory
and, though I can see their interiors in my mind as I
type this, I can't, for the life of me, remember their
damn names. Ask around at one of the above mentioned
places and they'll steer you to some good shopping.
There's also an awesome theatre in Montreal (again,
can't remember the name, but can see it in my brain)
that has tons of movies running early morning to late
night in a variety of languages, mostly independent
stuff, with very cheap prices. Tobias Van Veen
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) lives in Montreal and he can give
you some tips, I'm sure. Hope you have a great trip.
Take care. Andrew Duke
