no surprise to me--australia has little in law to protect the rights, civil
and otherwise, of it's citizens (we lack what to americans seem like the
most basic of rights--speech, free assembly etc.) in the past, this hasn't
been a significant problem because governments have acted in relatively good
faith (unless you were aboriginal).

however, the australian government is no longer acting in good faith. we now
have a particularly mean-spirited reactionary government that is more than
willing to toady to foreign governments or international corporations at the
expense of our national interests and personal rights.

added to that is a police force whose level of corruption and abuse makes it
more third world than first world.
