I think I'm looking for something more in depth than Generation Ecstasy/Energy Flash, etc. I've read The Clubcultures Reader (should revisit that). I'm wondering because, in the US, it's unlikely that you'd find a shared experience like the ones you're talking about at the Orbit because of the sheer expansiveness of the US. It would take me three days by car or several hundred dollars to go to NYC or two days to Detroit - whereas in the UK, everything is much closer and compact. That must have a huge influence on clubs and social life. For example, the next closest large city to me would be Chicago but it's an entire day's trip by car and expensive to stay there so I don't go often. Whereas, from my experience, Glasgow is a couple of hours from Edinburgh and fairly inexpensive or I would know people I could stay with in both cities. This has an affect on any kind of "collective" experience and I would expect the clubs and music benefit from it. Not to say it makes it better but just very different from club social life in the US. so- anything I can read that gets into these topics? Went about 3 out of 4 weeks for the next four years whilst at uni. I think it was the 6th Birthday when I walked through the doors at 6.20pm to see the place rocking already. Was it Sven Vath playing, finishing on an Underworld - Rez and Daft Punk - Rollin and Scratchin mix.. Went for the two Beltram no shows, the infamous Aphex Twin night, Dave Clarkes electro bits getting booed (ha ha), Garnier dropping a Beastie Boy's DnB track and getting told what for. Planetary Assault Systems and DJ Rush. I'm sure I was there for Surgeon's first night, if this was the one where he 'warmed up' for Andy Wetherall. The visuals - such a simple idea, so effective. The lights up for the penultimate song to see the mad man you had been dancing with all night. I was just about to say the same thing. I remember being pretty gobsmacked as a wide eyed kid the first time I went. I never went too often, but a few times. I remember going to see Mills there in '95, must have been May/June as we were handing out flyers afterwards for a party we were doing. Maybe the same one as you robert? I remember him dropping Kenny Larkins 'track' with was pretty new at the time. yep. an unreal place, mainly due to the crowd. It will be talked about in years to come, just because of the energy of the place.
